Occupying, arguably, the Shenandoah Valley’s most spectacular location, overlooking the historic Meems Bottom Covered Bridge and the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, this local landmark invites guests to step back in time and experience life as it might have been in a more romantic and gracious era.  Come and enjoy this beautifully restored 1892 Victorian gem for a weekend or a week.

Innkeepers Kay and Jim Payne welcome you to Strathmore House Bed and Breakfast on the Shenandoah.  Once the hub of an extensive apple orchard enterprise, Strathmore House now offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with an excellent standard of accommodation and matchless breakfast cuisine where guests are made to feel as welcome as friends.  Put aside rush hour traffic and the banality of television and revel in the serenity of English gardens, a rocking chair on Strathmore’s wraparound porch, or a leisurely walk over four acres of landscaped grounds for a bird’s eye view of the covered bridge.  Located on the banks of the Shenandoah River adjacent to the Meems Bottom Covered Bridge (one of only a few covered bridges remaining in Virginia), Strathmore House is approached via a long tree-lined avenue leading to the covered bridge. All four guest rooms are named for apple orchards that were once part of the farm and are individually styled with beautiful country fabrics, period pieces and the odd characterful idiosyncrasy!  Four posters, half testers, crown canopies and feather beds are just some of the special touches that reflect the innkeepers’ careful attention to detail and their guests’ comfort.   While the innkeepers have carefully preserved the flavor and ambience of the late Victorian period throughout, each of the private guest bathrooms is entirely modern.

Breakfast, a three-course repast, is served each morning and includes fresh juice and fruit along with the main entrée of the day.  All dishes are house specialties made on the premises.  Entrees change daily.  Please let us know if you have any special dietary needs or restrictions.

The Paynes offer their unique tales of house restoration in the Valley (not a year in Provence, but a somewhat parallel experience).  The innkeepers learned many entertainment, cooking and inn-keeping lessons during their lifetime of living, working and traveling abroad in South America, the Middle East, England and Scotland.

SE HABLA ESPANOL.  Kay speaks Spanish and appreciates and understands the culture of Latin America from her years of living in Panama and Honduras, as well as traveling extensively to other countries
